Woods'n Water in Windermere

On Saturday 7th May 2011, the N.W. Region of Christian Endeavour held an
extra Fun Day which included a walk in the woods at Grizedale Forest and various water activities on Windermere. It was organised to attract young people, but it was mainly the young at heart that joined in the activities!

About 40 people were involved in the day meeting up on the car park at Grizedale at 10:30a.m. The weather was kind to us in the morning and two different walks were offered, depending on fitness! It was evident who were fit – not only did they complete the slightly more challenging hilly terrain, but three of them carried wriggly toddlers in back packs!

The other group stuck to the sculpture trail on the pathways through the forest and enjoyed their stroll at a more leisurely pace.

The café seemed a good place to gather our breath and refuel our bodies ready for the afternoon, although some saved their pack lunch for the allotted time and place on the Eastern shore, at Rayrigg. Unfortunately, at this point the weather took a turn for the worse and we were unable to sit out in the field as had been planned and have a run around or play games but it did brighten up again for our water activities.

Four different groups took to the water of Windermere.

Six took the challenge of windsurfing and all mastered the balancing bit. The sails were up and down as bodies plunged into the deep! Most managed to sail away with the wind behind them and looked quite professional!

Eight folk opted for kayaking and once they’d grasped the skill of paddling in a straight line they disappeared up the mere on a short excursion before returning and playing some interesting games that involved walking on canoes and changing places.

Seven people had fun in the Canadian canoes and quickly ventured further afield on Windermere. When they returned they kidnapped a windsurfer and invented a new sport using their paddling prowess to tow a person on a surfboard.

The fourth group took a rather different view of the area but nevertheless, still took to the water. A return trip from Ambleside to Bowness was a good way to see the super views and enjoy the ambiance in a relaxing way- returning in style on the Swan, one of the larger vessels with refreshments on board.

Once everyone was dressed and back on terra firma we headed for the Chip
Shop for our fish and chip supper. The sun came out for a lovely evening and fantastic views across the lake.

Tired, but buzzing with the days activities it was time to return home. It had been a really great day, very enjoyable! So much so… that we intend to repeat something similar in the not too distant future.
